Do you have a junk drawer? You know, the kind with everything in it from batteries to screws, post its to pens, and perhaps keys. Yes, ours has random keys in it. I don’t even know what they belong to! Maybe they belong to a vehicle we no longer own or to a front door of a house from decades ago. 😆 This drawer is a place where once useful items have gone to die.
In the message I gave on Sunday, I spoke about a special key, we, as Christians hold. The problem is, we may have stuck this valuable key into our spiritual junk drawer! Some of us never pull it and use it the way God intended.
In John 16:5, Jesus tells His disciples, “But it is the truth I am telling you—it is to your interest that I should go away, for if I do not go away the Helper will not come to you.” This Helper He is telling them to anticipate is the Holy Spirit. After His resurrection, He once again says to His disciples, “I will send you what my Father has promised, but you must stay in Jerusalem until you have received that power from heaven“. He was reminding them He had something powerful to share with them…and it was the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the key. The disciples didn’t know the power of it until they received it. And often times, we don’t know or understand the power of it either. But the Spirit is the Living God within us in spirit form. The Bible explains that it is even better to have the Spirit of God in us than it is to have Jesus right next to us. Can you imagine? We often consider how cool it would be to have Jesus walking around next to us, just like the disciples did when He walked this earth. And yet, Jesus tells us that we are even better off than that. We have Him and His power residing within us! It may be hard to imagine, but it is truth.
We can’t afford to leave this key, the Holy Spirit, sitting in our spiritual junk drawer. This key is too important. It’s the key to having Him with us. The key to doing ministry. The key to loving others in ways that are only possible because of the Spirit. The key to making disciples. The key to understanding His will for our lives. The key to an intimate relationship with Him. My prayer for each of us today is that we would unlock and unleash the power of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to transform us into the person and the Church He desires for us to become.
